Understanding the hidden patterns that shape our lives

Family Constellations is a therapeutic and experiential approach that explores the hidden patterns, loyalties, and dynamics within a family system that may continue to influence our lives.

Many of us experience situations that seem difficult to explain. We may repeatedly encounter challenges in relationships, career, self-worth, or other areas of life, despite our best efforts to change them. Sometimes, the roots of these patterns may lie in our own experiences, beliefs, and emotions. At other times, Family Constellations explores whether they may be connected to experiences and events within the family system across generations.

We are all born into a family. Along with our biological inheritance, we also grow up within a particular family history, culture, belief system, and set of relationship patterns. Significant events in a family can leave a lasting imprint on the generations that follow.

Family Constellations looks at the family as a system — a living network in which every member has a place and a connection to the whole. In the constellation approach, this is sometimes described as the family soul or family field.

Just as stars form a constellation in the sky, the members of a family form their own unique constellation. Although we have our own free will and make our own choices, we may sometimes find ourselves repeating patterns that have existed in our family for generations, often without being consciously aware of them.

Bringing the hidden into awareness

A Family Constellation creates an opportunity to look at these patterns from a different perspective.

Through the constellation process, we explore the relationships and events within the family system and bring attention to dynamics that may have remained unseen or unresolved. This can sometimes help a person understand why they feel drawn towards — or repeatedly find themselves in — certain situations, relationships, emotions, or patterns.

The intention is not to blame the past or our ancestors. Rather, it is to acknowledge what has happened, honour those who came before us, and find a healthier place for ourselves within the family system.

A constellation may bring new awareness around issues such as:

Individual Sessions & Workshops

A Family Constellation can be experienced in an individual session or as part of a group workshop.

In an individual session, we focus specifically on the issue you would like to explore. The constellation is created using representatives, objects, or other methods depending on the nature of the session.

In a workshop, several participants may have the opportunity to explore their own issues through individual constellations. Other participants can take the role of representatives in a constellation, creating a powerful experiential process of witnessing, awareness, and healing.

What happens in a workshop?

A workshop is an opportunity to learn about the principles behind Family Constellations while also experiencing the process.

We explore:

The workshop also includes guided meditations and experiential exercises focused on themes that are common to many of us in relation to family, belonging, relationships, and healing.

One or more individual constellations may also be facilitated during the workshop, depending on the format and time available. Participants may take part as representatives, allowing them to experience the process from within rather than simply observing it.

The process of Family Constellations is explained fully during the workshop, so no previous experience is required.

Sometimes, understanding where a pattern comes from is the beginning of changing it

Family Constellations offers a compassionate space to look at what may have remained unseen, acknowledge what belongs to the past, and create space for a different way of moving forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Family Constellations is an experiential approach that explores patterns and dynamics within a family system that may be influencing your present life. A constellation can help bring awareness to recurring patterns in relationships, emotions, career, self-worth, belonging, or other areas of life. The process offers a different perspective and may help you relate to these patterns with greater understanding and clarity.

No. You do not need to know everything about your family history. However, information about significant events such as early deaths, separations, adoption, miscarriages, major losses, or family exclusions can sometimes be useful. We work with whatever information is available to you and do not need to search for or uncover a particular event in order for a constellation to be meaningful.

Both options are available. An individual constellation allows you to work privately and focus entirely on your own situation. In a workshop, you may bring your own issue for a constellation or participate as a representative in someone else’s constellation. Being a representative can itself be a meaningful and insightful experience, and you do not need to have a personal constellation to benefit from participating in a workshop.

Family Constellations is an experiential approach to exploring personal and family-system patterns. It should not be considered a substitute for medical, psychiatric, psychological, or other professional treatment. Every person’s experience is different, and the process and outcomes are subjective. If you are receiving medical or mental-health care, you should continue working with your qualified healthcare professional.

Not necessarily. While many people come with a particular concern, such as a relationship difficulty, career issue, recurring emotional pattern, or family situation, you may also come simply because you feel stuck or sense that something in your life is not flowing as you would like. Sometimes the constellation reveals a perspective you had not considered before.

That is completely fine. You do not need to arrive with a family tree or a list of difficult events. We work with the information you know, and sometimes what emerges during the process can offer a new way of understanding your experience. The purpose is not to search for a hidden family secret or to find someone to blame.

A constellation does not aim to change another person. The work begins with you — your awareness, your relationship to your family history, and the patterns you may be carrying. When our own perspective and inner relationship to a situation changes, our experience of that situation can also change. Sometimes this may naturally influence the way we relate to others.

Emotions are a natural part of the constellation process. You may experience sadness, relief, anger, love, or other feelings as you explore your family system. There is no right or wrong way to experience a constellation. You are given space to move through whatever arises at your own pace, with care and respect.

Yes. You can attend a workshop simply as a participant or representative. In a group constellation, representatives are invited to stand in for members of another person’s family system. Many people find that being a representative gives them insights into their own lives and experiences, even when the constellation is not specifically about them.
